A lot.

The economical crisis could partly blame overpopulation, too many unemployed citizens and too few jobs to offer. Add the fact that most of the taxes only go to power and money-hungry politicians - only a little is left. Divide the remaining by the number of Filipinos...And almost nothing is your answer, a good reason why most Filipinos are below the poverty line.

Another, though not that noticed, is the changes in the landscape. Since land alloted for homes are not enough anymore because of overpopulation, they need to destroy the forests. Or maybe because they're jobless, people resort to destroying the environment to get fast goods - not to mention fast money.

Also because of joblessness, some people turn to violence as a way of living. The result? Sky-high crime rates.

Because parents have no money, they can't afford to send their child to school - illiteracy then occurs.

In short, there's just not enough jobs to go around, and problems spread like a chain reaction...

I really don't know if there's more, though.

The population of the Philippines is about 80 million. The population of the U.S. is just about 4 times this (about 300 million). Now, imagine putting a quarter of the entire U.S. population in an island barely the size of California. What would it be like?. Yes, that is the Philippines. Too many people with few resources, education and employment opportunities. The overpopulation is largely due to the influence of its religion. Ninety five percent are Catholics. The Catholic church in the Philippines totally cinsider any form of birth-control, contraception and abortion as unacceptable. This led to poverty and corruption in the government.

A more liberal Catholic church that will realize the problem of overpopulation and change its viewpoint on the issues of birth-control control and contraception. This will be a good start to control population growth.

Corruption is more difficult to solve. This is the same as with any other third-world country. Corrupt politicians and government officials are always above the law. The rule of law mostly favor the rich and the powerful. This continue to fuel radical and extremist thoughts among the poor, that is usually met by the corrupt police and military with brutal means.

I moved here just under a year ago and crime is comparable to that of any major city I would assume. I would assume that Austin has less crime just because it is a really safe city. It would be hard to find crime rates in Manila as many are unreported and the metro is so huge that 90% of the crime may be in 10% of the city. There would be no way to tell--government technology is still rather archaic here. Crime should not be an issue for you.... Biggest difference between here and Austin (for me--visited Austin only once for a conference) is the cleanliness. Austin is a much cleaner city. If you are moving here for work (via a company package), you will likely live in a condo or high-end subdivision that will have more security than you can imagine. You should feel safe. (Then again, we are building a house in a subdivision and are building a wall in front....still not fully sure why but when in Rome....) Also please remember when you are here next month (it will likely be raining) that the rain is not year-round and it is usually quite beautiful weather.

Unemployment and poverty are the biggest problems due to population explosion in the PI. Educate and convince people to use contraceptives and let the politicians legislate a quota for childbirth. Maximum 2 children per family.

The Philippines has one problem that will keep it from dealing with population growth, The Catholic Church. That moribund albatross around the neck of that country will prevent them from dealing with the problem unless they root it out and strangle it to death. A little bit of religion is like a little bit of syphilis, unless eradicated, it always gets worse.
