My uncle family's has 2 dogs. A boxer and a beagle. Both of which have spent most of their life in a kennal. They are never let out, only fed leftovers and bones, never petted, never given any attention, overweight, and even though they live in the the same small space they live on chains so short they can't even smell each other. My uncle's family has a huge backyard. A backyard big enough to fit my whole house. But he'll never let his dogs out of the kennel because for fear of them peeing on the grass and turning it yellow. His family often forgets to feed them and will only feed them when they hear howling. Their other excuse for not feeding them or giving them any attention is because my uncle says the dogs belong to 2 of his sons and that it's thier problems to deal with.
I have been wanting to report them, but I had always believed that my uncle would come around and actually start giving these dogs the love they deserve. And they live in 6 hours away from me.

The last straw was when his family came to visit me. They took a look at my dog (which I rescued from them 9 years earlier) and said he was getting too old, he wasn't cute anymore, and that I should give him to the pound. How cruel can a person be?

Because I asked a question about animal abuse DOES NOT mean I don't care about people. Thanks. If I see a person being abused I'll report that.
And I don't know why they're overweight. Maybe because they've only seen 10 ft of the world in their lives and their fed table scrabs and chicken bones? This family lives 6 hours away from me. I don't know what happens everyday. I'm just stating what I see.

This is absolutely horrible. Although he is not actually physically abusing them by hitting them etc. he is still abusing them. Dogs are a pack animal and need love and attention. If he knew he wasn't or his sons weren't going to look after them properly he shouldn't have let them stay in his house, or on his property in the first place. As for the person who said if they are not fed a lot how can they be overweight, its probably because they can't even move to get the least bit of exercise! So the little they do eat just stays on them and turns to fat! I feel so sorry for those dogs! And even if they are his sons dogs, if he sees they are not treating them right he shouldn't just leave them, he should be responsible and make sure that the sons either sort it out or they should rehome them.
And what sort of person only has a dog when its young and healthy. When you get a dog it becomes part of the family. Would you get rid of a member of your family just because they are getting too old now and they don't look as good as they did when they were younger! That is just pure nasty!
I would report it!

There are reasons to report animal abuse many are not aware of that they should be. The following contains important information that could save lives, human as well as animal. The link between animal abuse and human abuse has become ever apparent. So much so, that the FBI now uses reports of animal abuse to help analyze the threat potential of suspected and known violent offenders. According to the FBI, 80% of violent offenders had previous incidents of animal abuse. Studies have also shown the link between animal abuse and child abuse. One study revealed that in 88% of 57 New Jersey families being treated for child abuse, animals in the home had been abused. The abuse was sometimes done by the same family member who abused the family. In some cases it was for the same reason the person abused the family. In other cases the animal abuse was done to intimidate or punish the abused family members. Sadly, some of the animal abuse was done by the child who was abused, as a way to act out their anger and hurt. Still not convinced that it is absolutely neccesary to report animal abuse? Then read the following..... Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Carrol Edward Cole, Son of Sam, Albert De Salvo "Boston Strangler", "Happy Face Killer" and Arthur Gary Bishop all had histories of animal abuse. In an 18 month period there were 7 school shootings, here in the US. Most relating in the deaths of classmates. In all 7 of these shootings it was learned that the perpetraters had previously abused, tortured and killed animals.

Yes, this is definitely neglect and abuse. You should call the police and the humane society to check them out right away. Your uncle (as well as a few people who left responses to your question) seems like a psychopath if he would suggest to you that you should get rid of your dog because he's old. Animals are living creatures, and when someone agrees to take them in, they NEED to take care of them. If they were children they would be taken away.

Not only is this animal abuse, they could be in danger. If they are starving, they may have bloated bellies and not really be fat. Worms could also cause a dog to look fat when in fact they are not. Either of these things can kill the dogs. You can report them anonomously if you don't want your uncle to know it was you. Even if the investigation shows that they are healthy, at least you will feel better.
Neglect is animal abuse too.

You need to report this immediately, and if you cannot, you need to have someone else do it. The only person who should be sent to the pound is your uncle!!!! See how he likes being confined and fed scraps! You are doing the right thing, now call the animal protection agency in the town where he lives, or email them with his address.

The state usually sees abuse as the eminant danger of the animal's life. By not petting or not enough attention won't get Animal Control there, unless someone Reports Mistreatment. Then they will investigate the situation.....I hope this helps.

Well if it's really your uncle's sons' dogs, don't report your uncle. Report his sons. That way, your uncle will still feel the burn 'cause he's the one who still has to deal w/ the authorities in the end.

YES!!!!! i would definitely call someone. it all depends on where you live,as far as who to contact.probably police and animal control.
you could also talk to him an if you have the room see if he would let you take the dogs. more than likely if they are older dogs an sent to the pound they would not get adopted. most family's will adopt puppy's first.
good luck with your decision.
