For mild insomnia, I usually put something boring on at a low volume on the TV. And turn down the TV's brightness.
For more severe cases, usually due to working at odd hours, I stay up for a whole night/day until I am ready to fall over at my desired bedtime. After that it's a matter of maintaining that bedtime/waketime schedule.

I am your best friend about this.I have had trouble for about 3 years up till about a month ago.I was on over the counter medication(tylonal p.m,sleep tite) then also was on medication from the dr like ambien, and trazadone and nothing.I was either wide awake or was a zombie for a few hours and couldnt feel right either so my mother who is a health nut told me about a vitamin called 5HTP.....It was the answer for me.It cost about 9.00 for 50 pills and I bought it a C.V.S...i WAS told its like eating a thanksgiving turkey meal(the chemical you feel afterwards the sleepy feeling and after taking 2 about 1 hour before bed I sleep a good 6 hours which believe me is heaven. Its non addicitive and is natural...Give it a shot.So noiw I combine melatonin and 5htp and sleep from about 11 at night till 5-6 in the morning with no hang over at all and feel great...MAYBE THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU..GOOD LUCK

Try hot bath or shower before sleep.
You may be subconsciously worried about something.
I've heard that over the counter sleeping pills are good for settling back in to a routine but not for long term usage.

Depending on your age, Tylenol PM helps. But if your in your teens, lay off the caffeine, chocolate, energy drinks ater 5 or 6 PM. Once you get into a routine, you will sleep like a baby.

go to your local health food store and they can help you find a natural sustance, as opposed to something over the counter that can be habit forming or not good for you. Warm milk helps but it releases something I can't recall at the moment - tryptophane, I think it is - and you can buy that in pill form at a health food store without all the mess of cleaning up cooked milk in a pan.

I suggest that if you're lying in bed and finding that you're unable to sleep, get up and go through your bedtime routine again (brush teeth, drink a glass of water, etc), and then try again.
Also, try not to use your bed for a place to read or watch television, but only for sleep ... and sex ;)

Try warm milk, I know it doesn't sound too good, but I have heardit will help! Also check out the pharmacy for over the counter sleep aids or talk to your doctor! They say lavander is also calming!
