I know some very hard workers and successful people who have GEDs instead of diplomas, and I understand that high school is not the best option for every person, but to answer your question, here is one of the reasons they are looked down upon:
For one reason or another, you quit high school. You might have a good reason, but a potential employer does not know that. They know that you were unable to persevere, you were unable to complete something that was expected of you. That causes them to wonder if you are capable of thriving in their particular workplace, under their rules. When the going gets tough, will you give up? Will you strive to succeed at your work or will you throw in the towel and quit?
This is something potential employers will consider, and if there are other qualified applicants, they very well might choose a high school grad over of the holder of a GED.

one it means you quit something important but if you dont get your g.e.d then you are a quiter and lazy because a education is very important in life let alone a tool for a better job.
one that gets a g.e.d plus a degree looks better than just a high school diploma
Think about it your life is made up of what you start and complete not what you start and quit
fact the owner/founder of Dollar General stores only has a first grade education but did go back to get a ged .so you can succeed in life with out but your most likely going to have to work harder.why not work hard on education then get a real job making money to work hard to make more?

well if you explain your situation and particular difficulties you had to go through i dont think anyone will look down on a GED . but if no one knows that and the general consesus i've been hearing is that someone who got a GED couldnt hack the real thing and is a quitter.
