Most of Midwood is pretty safe. There is a very large Orthodox Jewish population in Midwood so most of the restaurants are kosher. The best pizza in New York City (just voted the best, again, by TimeOut New York) is DiFara's on Avenue J and 15th Street (at the subway station). The pizza is phenomenal! There is a branch of the public library around the corner. A few blocks up on Avenue M is a great store called AmazingSavings - a "variety" store for lack of a better word with unbelievable prices.
There is also a tv studio a block from that store - large shopping areas on Coney Island Avenue, Avenue J and Avenue M. The Q train stops on Avenues H, J and M (and East 16th Street). The B and Q stops at Kings Highway (and 16th Street) and Newkirk Avenue. The Q runs local and is about 30 minutes to Manhattan. The express B is about a 25 minute ride. There are buses on Kings Highway, Avenue J, Avenue M, Coney Island Avenue, Ocean Avenue.
And, the most important thing - there are wonderful bakeries in Midwood.
(I never lived in Midwood, but I grew up in Brooklyn and went there very often to go to DiFara's. I still get off the train if I'm in Brooklyn - yes, it's that good.)

I was born and raised in Brooklyn. Midwood is a nice area, but like anywhere you just have to use good judgment and be aware of what is going on around you. It should take about 45 minutes to get to Manhattan by subway. Unless there are delays which the subway is famous for! Good luck with your move.

OMG you had better buy a hand gun and some body armour and don't go out at night. A good life insurance policy is a bonus too.
