My dog just turned 13 about a month ago (big Golden Retriever, weighs about 90 pounds), and his right eye is kind of hanging low. The only times we see it this low is whenever he is in a very deep sleep or has been given tranquilizer pills to calm him down during a thunderstorm. But this is now consistent. I've read up on dog eyelid diseases/problems, and I could probably relate this one best to ectropion, except I'm doubting this to be right considering it's an inheritable disease, and considering it's inheritable, you'd think it would first show up a long time ago. What is it, and what can I do about this? Is this common to see in older age retrievers? Please do not suggest surgery, as he's far too old to handle surgery now.

In regard to cagney's response, I only mention the tranquilizer to give you an idea of what it looks like. The last time he had a pill was at least two years ago. We've made sure not to give those to him anymore considering his age.

take him to the vet and let them look. if it's his third eyelid up and not the bottom hanging down this could be showing a sign of something wrong in the eye and he needs immediate attention. and if surgery is required, he is older but many vets have anestetic that is as safe as you can get for an older dog. just make sure you do bloodwork and have monitoring during the procedure. but i'm not saying have surgery. no one on here can tell you anything without a veterinary degree and actually seeing the dog. honestly i would worry more about giving him tranquilizers at his age than a simple surgery. if it's the type of tranquilizer most common called acepromazine, he is really too old to be taking this anymore. either way a trip to the vet is in order. good luck.

ok just checking about it, thanks for responding.

Unfortunately this is a sign of age in all creatures. Trust me at my age there are a lot of things starting to sag. The eyes commonly begin to sag in old age. Your dog will be fine. Just keep check of it and take the dog to the vet if signs of irritation begin.
