What are the treatment options for neonates found with HBcAb +ve. Are HBIG doses of 200IU each at birth and 15 days the right course of treatment?. [HB vaccine at 0,1,2 and six months have also been prescribed}. Please give any other advice to prevent infection to baby.

The baby has already contracted hepatitis B in utero, so there is no use of giving preventive therapy, HBIG and vaccine now. There is acute infection with high viral replication. In neonatal hepatitis B, there is 90% chance that there will be chronic liver disease. Trials for treatment of Hep. B with antiviral drugs and interferon have mostly been done in adults. There is very little research on treatment of hepatitis B in neonates and young children. Very sorry.
