Safe places to eat: same as anywhere. If the restaurant is busy, then the food is very likely safe; if it's empty, the locals are probably staying away for good reason! Also, look for a place where you can see the kitchen, because then you have an idea on how clean it is. I found street venders usually to be pretty good because the food they use if fresh and they cook it right in front of you.

Don't get ice cream from street venders, however, because it may have been thawed and refrozen.

The people are very, very friendly, and very tolerant of different religions and ethnicities. If you want to make a good impression, don't neglect your hygiene (many travellers think that because they're in a non-western country it's acceptable to stop bathing frequently; this comes across as both gross and insulting), respect local customs in terms of clothing (no short-shorts or tank tops; locals tolerate it because they need tourism money, but it's still not proper attire), and do make an effort to learn a bit of Thai (Thais are very proud of their language and appreciate it when people make the effort to learn it). If you follow all these tips you will probably find that you're being charged less at the market and get faster service in general.

Also, if you're frustrated, don't lose your temper; Thais are very laid back and losing your temper and shouting just makes you look like a jerk.

I don't know much about the beaches because I only went to the north. I loved Chiang Mai!

Lonely Planet (both the guide book and the forum) is a great resource for good accomodation.

Have fun!

Thailand is wonderful - people are amazing.
Just be polite and learn some Thai and adopt the local good humour. Dont get angry about anything - even if there is a problem - resolve amicably.
Remember this particulary when haggling prices - good humour is essential.
The main thing is respect for people and their customs - learn thai etiquette. never touch anyone's head, respect for buddha images, respect for the king, greeting people with a 'wai' etc etc.
its nothing too complex but the opportunity to seriously offend somebody exists if you are not aware of the basics.

Dont eat at tourist places if there is a choice - the food is generally more expensive and inferior - catering to the western palate. Eat where the locals eat. ( unless you simply cannot handle chilli or fish sauce which the dish will inevitably contain in abundance!)

For beaches etc i recommend finding the smaller resorts where you will get a nicer beach, friendlier staff, less crowded, less expensive.

You may well encounter other tourists on your travel who are loud, obnoxious, have young thai 'girlfriends', etc etc but unfortunately this is part of the tourist economy.
just do your bit to be an ambassador for whatever country you hail from, and you will have an excellent time in Thailand and the Thai people will be most hospitable.

Thai people are very humble. When you go there dont flaunt the fact that you are a tourist. Be humble and polite to them and they will give you the same respect. Don't dress up unless you are going to a formal engagement. And dont flash a lot of cash, your asking for trouble. If you are alone stay in the area where there are a lot of tourists There are hotels all over the place the prices rang anywhere from 15 to 50 dollars a night some are mor but not the norm.Pick one if you dont like it then go to the one across the street. The food is excelent most is freshly prepaired but like any restraunt be wary of how it is prepaired.Personally i staid away from the fish but it is very good and cheep. Go and enjoy you will have a wonderful time.Im going back in Feb.

A beautiful, un-spoilt area in the heart of Isaan Province, Thailand. The course offers a unique location in this relatively tourist free part of Thailand What we would like to do, is invite the golfer to experience their sport within the Kingdom of Thailand but also to see what a treasure trove of culture abounds within this special area! Our golf course is a relaxing environment, with many unique features which await the golf tourist. The golfing experience can be a challenge as 13 of the 18 holes have at least 1 water hazard plus the inevitable “beach”! We invite you to view our pages and to look at the unique area which is Isaan Province
