Two things occur to me...as a father of a young girl. First, why doesn't he make the trip to see you? If he really wants to see you he can overcome any obstacles. That way you don't have to even ask your dad. Next, by asking the question you already have the answer...you know exactly what your dad would say and why he would say it. So you already have the answer.

Should you tell your dad about your online boyfriend at all? How involved is he in your life? Are you seeking his approval? What is the likelihood that your father will react with anger? Will that change anything for you?
Some of this depends on how old you are. Are you an adult or a responsible teen? Did your mother have any difficulty with the information and now she's passing the issue onto your dad for his known response?
Honesty is the best policy. You can't make this appear any different than it is. You have an online boyfriend.
Have you or will you meet the boyfriend? Is he in your age bracket?
Tell your father that the internet is an amazing place to meet new people. Ask him if he ever uses it....for news or videos or music? See if fhe has any comfort level at all about the internet. Then tell him.
Be prepared for his response.
Good Luck!

I am sure it is going to depend on how old your are on how heated your dad's temper might get. If your at least 16, he might not get near as pissed as he would if you are under that age. I think if the boy wants to see you, he needs to come to your house, by appoint ment only, while both parents are there. This would should your dad that he is ok. Besides, you should not even be thinking of going anywhere, especially that far away to meet a total stranger, yes stranger. There is no possible way that you can be one hundred per cent sure that the guy is who he claims to be. Let your Mum be the one to break the news and tell dad that you and her invited him to the house to meet him. Do not be a fool and take off three hours away to meet him. He needs to come there.

If he's the type to fly off the handle and returns all kinds of personal insults to you because of your situation, I wouldn't confide in him about the boyfriend. If it's going to strain an already bad relationship, I would hold off. He doesn't have to know everything in your life. At least you can communicate with your mum in a civil way. Sometimes we want to be accepted by everyone. Sometimes that isn't possible, even by our parents or family members or even friends. If you think it's going to set him off, your first basic right to yourself is your happiness as an individual. Maybe someday down the road he will become more settled and in control, and then you could sit down and have a man-to-man talk with him. Until then, don't tell him anything if he's going to dump on you.

Its the 3 hours away that really gonna bother him. Why should you travel ? As a male, its not unusual to travel now and then. Eventually this distance will become a burden. Regardless on how much you butter your dad up, I assure you , this will be his reason to say no. If you could get your friend to come to you, this will greatly improve your odds.

The best way to tell him is probably by writing to him. That way, he can reply when he feels it best, (after he has had some time to cool down), and you both can avoid the awkwardness of a face-to-face conversation.
Is there anyone you know that could act on your behalf as a mediator? I met my fiance online, and let me tell you, my mother was a lifesaver. My father nearly went ballistic, and she managed to calm him down and made sure he didn't say anything to me that he would regret.
