First of all, I am NOT asking this question for myself! I am happily married! My friends and I were discussing this the other day and I was wondering how men really felt about dating a woman who has a child. Some men say they don't care if the woman has a child or not, but what is the real verdict? :-)

Overall, I'd say it's not an issue. Though it does add an element to the relationship that can pose problems. For an less mature man, there may be issues of having to accept that the child would rightfully come first. Or to the more mature side of looking at things, it's perhaps a little scary to consider if things go on, but then sour as it's easy for both the man and the child to develop attachments.

Of course, in the big picture of life's complexities, it's not such that it can't be navigated. But the reality is that it's an issue that most men will not be familar with how to navigate, and many may simply choose to avoid it.

I think its depends on the guy. I for one am not interested in dating a girl with a child because I don't want to have children. Also, dating a girl with a child, the guy has to be prepared to not just be a boyfriend, but possibly a father figure to the child and deal with the child's real father.

I wouldn't mind dating a woman who already has a child.

HOWEVER...

The child's biological father has to be on tolerant terms with his ex-wife. No guy wants any domestic trouble with another man, when he can just find a date without a jeolous ex-husband. There must be absolutely ZERO affection with ex-husband and ex-wife... or else the boyfriend will be wondering if they still have feelings for each other.

Also... It must be clear to the potential boyfriend that the single mother is not baiting you just for support and money. You are not her personal bank... you are her BOYFRIEND, for love & companionship, not for money.

But everything else, besides that, is pretty relative and differs between men.

I think dating a woman who has a child between ages 5-12 is fine. But I wouldn't want to date one who's child is under 5 (the father could still be in the picture), or over 12 (who wants to deal with a teenager who hates you for dating his/her mother?). But tha'ts just me.

I agree with everything Bingley said. That is how I would put it. A young child with the father either out of the picture or on good terms with the mother is fine. I can probably handle one teenager but a house full of them would drive me nutz!

My lady and I love her grandson and treat him like ours, he is a cool 3 year old and a pleasure to be around.
