Have you taken a tour of your local jail? Give it a shot... but be careful... don't get too close to the bars... and don't wear anything that's going to draw attention to you...

They do have some "comforts" given to them. The thing is that a large portion of people have families--kids, wifes, sick mothers, little siblings, etc. Having to sit by yourself for so many hours a day thinking about the "real world" and the people you love in a bed that isn't your own, being fed food that isn't chosen for you, and having to realize that things like education and a second chance are blessings not to be taken for granted has to be more punishment than I can imagine. The reason that they provide education and things to better the inmates is in hopes that when they get their freedom back, they'll leave a better person. After their stay, they'll want to do something good with their life. It's kind of a incentive to start a new life, turn a new page...

I honestly do not believe that jail is enough punishment for people that are convicted of breaking the laws. Granted there are a few institutions that are different from others, but on the general jails that I have been in to visit or worked in, the inmates have it way to easy.
I work as a correctional officer. I can tell you right now that inmates have it way easier than most people in the free world. It is no wonder why doing time for most inmates is so easy. They don't have to worry about getting fired from a job. They don't have to worry about cooking thier own meals(regarding those that are not kitchen trustees). They get free cable. Pretty much get to sleep all day if they feel like it.
Yea, on the inside it is kind of nasty and smelly and you see alot of violent acts, but is not as bad as what people make it out to be in the free world. We truely are not rehabilitating these people at all in my own mind. You can see for yourself on the inside, and you can really see it when most of the people are regular visitors to the jail.
I really believe that if we started taking away these so called "privelages" that are pretty much rights (not actual legal rights) such as t.v., commisary, phone calls at any time during the day, and much more they get to have, people really would think twice about breaking the law cause they would remember how much it actually sucks not having the rights everyone else in the free world gets. Pretty much nowadays the only thing inmates don't get that people in the free world don't get, is the ability to go home each night and sleep in their own beds or see be with friends and family.

Prisoners do get the things you mentioned above, but have you ever personally seen the inside of a jail? ICK! They are icky, icky places. The punishment is the removal of the right to do what you want when you want. Jail is also supposed to rehabilitate (okay so maybe this doesn't happen a lot). Most ex-cons I know would never "choose" to go back as it is a very unpleasant experience. Hope you never do any personal research on this.

Not an answer, just a comment. I am so happy to see that the people who have answered know their stuff.
Try spending one day locked up in one small room of the place where you live. It should be the bathroom. Come out only for quick meals.

As far as I am concerned, getting violent criminals off the streets is enough. Throwing in some peripheral tortures does not interest me.
It would be better for all if prisoners were allowed to get stoned, watch TV all day, and eat fluffernutter sandwiches until they are amorphous blobs.
Don't need prisoners coming out all buff.

in california they have gotten rid of exercise, personal items, and even the law library! which gang do you want to join?
how about being in your cell 23 hours a day and then walk in a slightly larger space by yourself for the other hour?
does it still sound nice to you?

yes, true, but they don't have the freedom of coming and going. Eating out in restaurants. going out with friends. sleeping in a nice comfortable bed.
