Topics to talk to him about:
Encourage discussions about him! People love opportunities to discuss their hobbies, diets, hopes, dreams, childhood, inventions, lottery winnings, philosophy, political leanings, or personal achievements.
If he is reluctant to talk....take the first step by introducing a topic you think he'd have an interest in, and lay it out for him.....and give him an open-ended question.
Like: It's amazing that they have so many crime dramas on television this season! How do you think they keep coming up with so many new story lines?
Or: Hear about the guy in Midtown that won the $13 million? What would you do with that much money if that were you who won the lottery?

It depends on what kind of person he is and his likes and dislikes. If you want to connect with that person, you would definately talk about what he likes and what he carries a passion for. If he's in politics, talk about that. His favorite team the Broncos, research a little and talk about that. You can always ask him what is his most embarrassing moment or what was his best Christmas like, or general questions like those to break the ice. Always a good joke or interesting experience (that is short) breaks the ice of a conversation and may stem off to other conversations. Good luck!
