I went to a bridal shower for a friend recently, and it was nice cause they got everything they asked for...but one of my friends got them a $100 gift card for a local grocery store....her idea on that was well, they're getting all these things they need, but what about food? and all the necessities of life?
Doing this will give the couple a nice boost on groceries etc

cash!!!
seriously!!! I got 4 toasters, 2 microwave ovens, 5 blenders, 5 croc pots, 7 sets of bed sheets, 3 knife sets... I was even registered at Bed Bath and Beyond... but people are lame and don't check out the registries...
Newlyweds can always use cash... even if it is only 20 bucks...

Anything off their registry, soemthing that they can look ack on, think in terms of a wedding album; but a little more creative, or soemthing personalized liked monogramemd towells, maybe $60.00 or from Things Remembered maybe $200.00+

get a laundry basket and place inside all the things that newlyweds forget to buy......a couple new dish cloths, dish drainer, ice cube trays , laundry soap, fabric softener dishsoap, bar soap, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, paper plates, plastic silverware, toilet paper, paper towels...etc....
this is all stuff they can use (and probably will) as they move into thier new home. and best of all most of it is disposable, and can spend thier time doing what newlyweds do best ;)
