I never had a dog, but I had 4 babies. When the High levels off hormones left my body, a lot of my hair fell out. I imagine that the dog is reacting to her hormonal balance. Makes sense to me!!

Having puppies is a big stress on the mother dog. Excessive shedding wouldn't surprise me if you didn't do something to meet her greater needs for health, like switch her to a puppy food because it has more protein and fat in it.
Stick within the same brand so she won't get diarrhea and more stress from changing brands. OR change gradually.
Nature's Recipe has some good treats that are formulated for skin and coat. I know other high quality treats are out there specified for skin and coat, or hips and joints etc..
just can't think of the names of them right now. GL with the litter!

Like always I would take it to the vet just to be safe. But having puppies is very stressful on the mothers body, and she may be not getting enough vitamins and minerals she needs to take care of herself and producing milk for the puppies, you may want to try a simple vitamin supplement. It could be an actual sign of stress for the dog... and this may be far fetched... but my dog just got diagnosed with hypothyroidism and one of the main reasons we ended up taking her to the vet was because of hair loss, bad hair loss, and not being able to grow it back. After she was diagnosed with it I did a lot of reading on hypothyroidism on the internet and found that it usually happens in female dogs, and one of the main causes is the dog being spayed or having puppies, because for some reason the thyroid stops working correctly and it dwindles away. Treating the disease isn't a problem, a simple blood test confirmed she had hypothyroidism and she takes 1 pill twice a day, that we push into some cheese (she LOVES cheese.) The pill is very inexpensive it cost us about $12 including taxes for 120 pills. And you'll notice a more upbeat behavior in the animal within a couple of days and within a week or two the hair already becomes shinier and thicker and begins to grow back.

Any fluctuation in hormones can cause hair loss. Whelping and producing milk both are very hard on a dams system. Keep the dog groomed and add a tablespoon of virgin olive oil to her diet. It will not stop the hair from falling out but will keep her new coat and skin from drying out. If she has bald spots I would call the vet.

Yes. It has something to do with the hormones that go along with pregnancy and nursing. It happened with every dog of ours that raised a litter. The hair will grow back.

Yes, I wouldn't be worried unless it doesn't start growing back once the puppies are weaned or if the skin is red and inflamed.
