Windows XP Pro SP2 is the best Microsoft you can get right now, but I am also a vista beta tester and it will be worth it when it comes out. Make sure your video card is a higher end though as the Aero takes up a lot of power. I'd reccomend at MINUMUM a 6600GT....if you have ATI...well sorry for you. I've never had good luck with their cards (but i am on an NForce chipset at all times so who knows)
I have a 7600GT that rocks through Vista. I wouldnt get the ultimate if I were you. Unless you are doing some serious business stuff or need unbelievable security I would go with Vista Home Premium. It is basically like XP Pro for the next gen. Powerful, fast, and everything the average home user needs. If you get anything more than that it will just be bloatware anyway. Good luck!!
By the way linux is good too, but for the average user it takes too much time to get used to, and set up just the way you want it. I'd reccomend staying with windows if that is all you know, and you don't want a headache. Took me a long time to get used to linux and i am a "techie". If you do go that route i'd go with SuSe....easiest to adapt to if you ask me

Well, you tend to be mostly stuck with XP at the moment. Vista is not yet for sale, and while it will be soon, there are some...problems. First, Vista Ultimate is $400. That's four hundred dollars for an operating system. Older versions of Windows, the best of which would be Windows 2000 aren't generally easy to buy and are no longer supported by Microsoft. If you want to go outside the Microsoft world, you can go to Linux, with Ubuntu being a well supported and easy to use distro (version). Also, there's mac OS X, but to use that you need to buy a mac. A mac mini will cost you about $100 more than a copy of Vista ultimate.

I was never really crazy about Microsoft Windows (especially the 9x series) until XP came out. For the first time, Windows had stability (XP being built on the NT core) and good hardware support. Mac OS has always been a few steps ahead of Microsoft and OS/X is probably my all time favorite operating system.

For that amount of money I would suggest it's going to be very difficult to get something reliable and capable. I'm afraid she really needs to add more money to that.... "the misery of poor performance remains long after the joy of low price is forgotten" - this is never more true than when discussing technology. A built-in webcam can be replaced by an attachable item (these are quite cheap), which would help the purchase price. John Lewis give two year warranties as standard and have a good reputation. However, their cheapest is still about £375. The happiest users tend to be Apple users - but I suspect your daughter won't have the patience to save for one of these (even with the educational discount). Good luck.

Depends on what you do with your computer. Many of us who produce music, video or multimedia are anxious for Vista to get going, just for the support of larger amounts of RAM. I love XP x64, but there is not much driver or native x64 software support yet, and it's been out for two years already. Until they get their act together, XP Pro SP2 is about the best all-around MS solution.

I love 2000 and XP, I'm sure Vista is much better.
I can't stand Mac OS.
I do like Linux also, however.
