it mean? To me campgrounds are places you go on family vacations in state parks and KOAs but I'm sure that isn't what Mahalia Jackson and Paul Robeson and their predecessors had in mind. Any clue what the word means in this context and its origin?

The spiritual was written by someone who did not consider their life permanent and was referring to the fact that during the time of the generation of the children of Israel that wandered on the Sinai desert for their entire life had no permanent home.

The reference is not all that clear but then the hymn writer was not all that educated or aware of the history.
