Been there last year and almost got killed. Promise to never return. If you go to times square around 12 p.m., then everything for you will be fine and you will be seen on TV, but go there anytime after 4 p.m., you can just forget it. I went later because I thought standing for 12 hours to see a ball drop was ridiculous. That was my mistake. People were pushing you, fighting, throwing bottles etc. NEVER AGAIN

(To elaborate on Dr. Do Good)
Used to be pick-pockets and thieves among the throng of wacky, drunken revelers.
Another year, another number, hohum.
More and more wacky people around than you can shake a stick at.
The truth my friend lies beneath the rubble of the Twin Towers.
Nobody is ready for truth, so on with the wacky show!

I was there to bring in the year 2000, we were in a large group, so felt safe, but wouldn't suggest if I was alone or in a couple.
There is a large crowd and it can get quite scary..... Done it once, wouldn't really bother again.
