I think it helps. It seems to relieve the pressure of the nail pushing into the skin at the edge where it hurts. It's annoying to have the V catch on your socks, though, so I would wear a bandaid over it. Don't cut past the quick, though.
Also, I would pry up the edge of the nail on the side where it hurts and stuff a little tiny ball of cotton under the edge. (Don't rip the nail up or anything, just ease it up a bit with a nail file without tearing anything.) It will hurt like hell while you do it and for a little while after, but you're getting the sharp edge of the nail out of the sore skin and it lets the skin start healing.

THEORY HAS IT ( MYTH MOST OF THE TIME) ......that this will cause the nail to grow inward/incases of ingrown toenails. Thus causing the nail to pull inwards out of skin. In my experience, you shouldn't try this.......
#1- most people end up gettin it removed anyway
#2- dr. can put you on antibiotics.........
#3- if a/b dont work YOUR DR. can safely, and sterilly remove nail!!
However, you may not ever have your nail appear as it use to after removal. This is due to the possibility of damage to nailbed. With that being said,...a unique mail is better than a SERIOUS INFECTION!! Thus causing removal of the toe, that happens more than ALOT OF PPL THINK!!
BE SMART,....... if it's bad enough to ask,...go to Dr.
If your broke call for an a/b,...then F/U in office if NO better
