I just started using the Sonicare toothbrush and wanted to know the effects it has on gum recession. Does it prevent it or does it cause more of it? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

I am a complete believer and supporter of SoniCare. I recommend them to my patient's. Flossing is crucial to help prevent gum recession. When flossing you are going just beneath the gingival tissues a bit where most ( not even electric brushes can go ). To your answer...it does aid in doing a better job of cleaning around the gumline, but flossing is just as important and should be a regular part of your home care.
Remember, you should also see your hygienist and dentist every 6 months for routine cleanings and exams. There could be things going on that you can't always see.

My son has a really neat toothbrush that plays a song for him while he brushes. When the song stops, then he can stop brushing. My husband and I have regular. The sonic ones or electric ones arent the same as regular. Our dentist even recommends we keep the same ones since our teeth will last us until we die. (we are early 30's) Your dentist might know better though, since you have braces. Maybe you need the extra dental care that sonic or electric will make you brush more??

The main reason for gingival recession is the continued presence of plaque on your teeth and gums. Once plaque is removed, your gums are going to heal and regenerate (to a limited extent). So, the main goal is to remove the dental plaque and it doesn't matter if that was done using an electric tooth brush or a manual one (even though the soft-bristles manual tooth brush is always preferred).

My quick net search shows that dentists say electric toothbrushes help prevent "overzealous brushing," which helps prevent gum recession.

I have one, and I will never go back to a regular toothbrush! Love it.

It helped me a lot - and a several dentists have commented on how I have healthy gums - which I didnt have (they weren't great at all for a 30 year old) several years ago.

They take some getting used to, but I think they are worth the extra expense (lets face it, the refill heads are expensive)
Good Luck
