I had two cats, and one recently had to be put to sleep because of the artreitis in his legs. Now, our other cat seems so sad... so my husband and I were thinking of getting him a new cat, but until we get one, what can we do to help him out? Or am I just worrying about this too much, please no supid answers.

Cats are very aware of what is going on around them. He more then likely even knew that his best buddy was not feeling well. Sometimes, what they don't understand is why their house-mate is suddenly gone if that house-mate did not die at home.

Just as you need time to grieve, so does he. Share the time that you have together one on one and some day, the both of you will be ready to invite a new little buddy into your hearts.

Everyone mourns the loss of someone. The domestic cat is a fairly social animal, so I suppose they too can mourn the loss of a kitty friend.

Of course, cats think differently than us, and (most) are rather private creatures. If he were a dog, I'd say stay around him, give him attention, because dogs are super-social and being around his pack(you) would help him with sadness.

For a cat, it depends on his personality. If he's the type that loves being held or sitting on your lap, give him lots of that. If he's the type that will stand in the doorway and watch the family watch TV, continue to let him have his distance.

Humans often turn to drugs like alcohol or marijuana to deal with sadness. While certainly a bad idea in excess, maybe a little catnip will help him feel better?

It is natural for you cat to be depressed because he lost his companion. He's going through a grieving process. He will get over the loss eventually, just like you and your husband will. Until then just give him a little extra attention, maybe buy him a new toy and try to get him to play.
Depending on the age of your cat, he might not be too happy with you bringing a new kitten into the house, but if you do decide to make sure you introduce the two of them slowly. It is best if the new kitty gets his own room for a while until your cat gets used to his scent, then introduce them with the new kitty in his carrier/cage.

I had a friend who adopted 2 cats at the same time. This summer one passed away, and the other was completely miserable. She adopted another cat, around the same age, size, etc and that lifted whopper's (the cat) spirits. I think companionship is important with cats, especially if thats what they are accustomed to. My advice: spend as much time as possible with your recently widowed cat, and find him another playmate. I wouldn't go with a kitten, but that is your call. GOOD LUCK

Cats have feelings too and too many of them are overlooked becuase we are taught not to respect the emotional needs of animals. Why? I don't know, I guess maybe someone somewhere thought that it's weak or something but whatever, ANYWAY, it's great that you're concerned for your kitty. He deserves a good life and right now it's not. You should DEFINITELY get him a new friend. Relatively small task for you, but the difference between a good life and a sad life for your remaining kitty. What would be nice is if you brought home a nice cat from an animal shelter that needs a new family. Yeah?

I say don't get him a new cat. See how he reacts for the first week or so. If he's completely iserable, get hi a new friend. But it might just mean double the trouble. Get one that resembles your old cat, and has the same personality.

Give her or he alot of attention. Cats absoloutley love attention but if shes sad sometimes its best to leave her alone. I'm sure she'll love the new cat.
Good Luck!! :)

another cat can be a good or bad thing. maybe spending more time with your cat will help him be happyer. however if you get a new cat be sure to still spend a good amout of time with your old cat so he doesn't think he is being replaced :)

for sure he/she feels lonely like every body of us who live alone, so you have to hurry of getting him/her anther cat ,till that time you have to spend some of your time to be with it and play together ,that will make it better by not feeling lonely
