Abreva is the best over-the-counter medication. If you get them frequently, you may want to ask your doctor about prescription cream/ointment.
Stress, extreme weather are 2 of the most common causes. Not that you can avoid those!

I have heard apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball held to the area for a short time, but I don't know if it works.
The best thing I have ever used for cold sores is Lactinex pills. Ask your pharmacist. They are not prescription, but have to be refrigerated so they are not out on the counter. They somehow replace healthy microbes in the body that suppress the herpes virus. Start taking them at the first tingle, and sometimes it won't even go ahead to develop into a cold sore. Stop taking them when the cold sore or the feeling of a cold sore is gone.
The second best thing is Acidophilus pills. I believe it works the same way as the Lactinex but it takes longer. You will find it in the vitamin section. Again, ask your pharmacist how many you can safely take. Stop taking them once the threat of cold sore has passed.
This must be the best kept secret ever because I tried everything else to no avail until my pharmacist told me about the Lactinex.
I tried Lysine, but it did nothing to help me. Maybe it has to be taken consistently instead of just during an outbreak.
I hope this works as well for you as it has for me. I have often wondered if it would work for genital herpes as well, but I just don't know.

There's a lot of topical products you can use for cold sores.

Abreva
Herpecin
Campho-Phenique

If it's really bad you could go to the doctor and get prescription medication like Zovirax or Denavir. My little sister gets cold sores every winter and Zovirax works the best for her.

They are terrible. I tried all of the prescribed meds and over the counter ones. I put alcohol on a cotton ball and dry them up quicker. Sorry, but there is no easy way to get rid of them. Good Luck.

There is no cure for cold sores, its a type of herpes. however, you can manage/treat them by using those mediacated lip balms (check cvs, meijer, etc) or u can go to the dr and get a prescription. be careful when sharing drinks or kissing because they are highly contagious!

Once you have one it's hard to get rid of it. There's an over the counter medicine called Abreva that will make them go away faster. It will dry it out, however you have to be careful not to let it crack...it will bleed and then take longer to heal.

greenbuck,Exactly, I agree with Lysine and the directions, from greenbuk and then continue with the corn in you daily diet, that can be corn in any form like creamed corn, corn on the cob, pop corn, corn bread etc. We havebeen free from cold sores for many years, at least 15 years. This is worth a try, better yet " Try it you'll like it"

there is a supplement called lysine. It works great. As soon as you feel the tingle of one starting you should take one and it will either suppress it or make it go away much faster. You only have to take one a day. I use it and I dont get them anymore.
