Gullible, not playing with a full deck, a few sandwiches short of a picnic, a brain only a preacher could love, knows something is happening here but don't know what it is, clueless as Clouseau on a bad day, would rather talk to the dead than the living, the con man's friend, et cetera!

I don't understand your Q at all. If it walks like a duck, waddles like a duck, quacks like a duck; then it's usually a duck.

How does linguistics come into it? The person is superstitious. That's it.

Unless the writer is telling lies about himself. That's all I can see in it.
