As Pinar said, don't walk around the back streets of Taksim/Beyoglu at night, and don't wear revealing clothing, as some men may have preconceived misconceptions about foreign women, or about any woman who goes out at night, period. Don't walk around Aksaray, Dolapdere or Tarlabasi at all (not that you would have any reason to do so, other than maybe transferring on public transit in Aksaray). A friend of mine was nearly raped when walking home to her place by Osmanbey, but I used to live by there and never had any problems except for nosy neighbors.
Other than that, you should be okay. Just use street smarts as you would anywhere else.

I am an American living in Istanbul (Asian side near Kadikoy). I used to work in Kadikoy centre until 11 at night and would come home by minibus (15 min. ride) and never had a problem once. I can say that just for general safety I wouldn't go many places alone at night. I go around my neighborhood but I know all of the shop keepers well and most of the neighbors by sight. I only have one story and it involves Taksim. My girlfriend and I were walking together with our husbands a few yards in front of us. We were surrounded by men (older men at that, not young guys) and asked where we were going repeatedly. My girlfriend and I said over and over that we are married and our husbands are here. By the time our husbands turned around and saw what was happening the group split up quickly. We were dressed in jeans with long thick coats on and not at all looking like we needed a 'date'. It can happen anywhere in the world, though, so I wouldn't walk anywhere alone at night unless I really felt safe. Just be careful and don't stray far. You will make friends in Istanbul and just be sure you go out together after dark.

It is generally safe to walk alone especially on the main streets. I would recommend you to stay away from backstreets of Taksim. Additionally it is better not to prefer super mini skirts for the night outs. Because uneducated Turkish men think that foreign women are easy to get, they try their chance and your dressing style might encourage them.
On the other hand I feel safer in Istanbul streets than New York.
Hope you enjoy your stay in Istanbul.

Like any other big city in the world, it has safe places and dangerous places. Some friends correctly explained above. Don't get biased positively or negatively. We cannot say it's completely safe or unsafe. You can be sure somebody claiming either way is uninformed.

No. The problem is the gangs. If you find yourself in Istanbul at night, have a policeman escort you. During the day, Turkey's genarally a safe country.

I dunno about istanbul quite well, but i recommend ya dont ever try to walk in downtown detroit after 6-7pm. U would likely be mugged dunno if it makes any sense. I mean there r dangerous places everywhere but in Istanbul mostly in suburbs and also downtown istanbul like Taksim, Aksaray, Beyoglu , Kadikoy merkez maybe. Plus, u d betta get a car asap for your safety, but again, its same for everywhere...:) Regards...
