He never did.
In fact, he became engaged in a conversation with the Samaritan women at the well over that very topic. He informed her, that despite the fact that her people felt they could
"Worship god as it pleased them, and as it felt right to them, and as they Got the message out of it"
That they were wrong.
That salvation originated with the Jews, and that soon the time would arrive that God the Father, Yahweh, would accept neither worship at the Temple, or at Mount Gerizim, (As the Samaritans worshipped). But he would accept those soon, who worshipped in spirit, and TRUTH.
That there was only one truth. As Paul wrote, an Accurate Truth (Romans 10:2). In Koine Greek, this was called "epi gnosin" Epi means "upon". "Gnosin" - knownledge. Knowledge of God was not enough. ACCURATE knowledge, or "epi gnosin" - was what was neccessary. Not what each person took out of it.
As Ezekiel reported, in the man with the secretary's inkhorn, the people had to line up to GODS REQUIREMENTS for men. Not that men had to decide what would be ok by God. We were created for him, not vice versa.

Jesus never directly said that. Usually, He would answer them in a parable, and they would have to figure it out from there. The parables weren't hard to figure out, but sometimes, the Disciples and His other followers had a hard time figuring out what his parables meant. Others took these as being heretical, thus leading to His arrest and crucifixion.

If you desire I will tell you about `Isa (Jesus) (p.b.u.h.) son of Maryam (Mary)?
He used a stone for his pillow, put on coarse clothes and ate rough food. His condiment was hunger. His lamp at night was the moon. His shade during the winter was just the expanse of earth eastward and westward. His fruits and flowers were only what grows from the earth for the cattle. He had no wife to allure him, nor any son to give grief, nor wealth to deviate (his attention), nor greed to disgrace him. His two feet were his conveyance and his two hands his servant.
In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
When the angels said, 'O Mary, God gives thee glad tidings of a son through a Word from Him; his name shall be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honoured in this world and in the next, and of those who are granted nearness to God;

Because Jesus understood the mechanism of the human mind, he gave answers in parables, and let the people figure it out, but then He would ask questions, just to check up on us (He knew it couldn't hurt).

I dont believe He ever did say to "figure it out for yourself" in those exact words. But He did use parables and when Nicodemus asked "How can this be?" (about being born again) He answered with basically saying you can read the signs of the world, but not the signs of G-d. (which is essentially.....figure it out!)
Blessings in 2007,

He responded in parables which gives an answer to each individual and can mean somehting different to each individual as well as many generations down even though cultures change the parables STILL make since to us. Now who is genius enough to think of that besides the Almighty.

Mat 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise.
He referred them back to Scripture, or asked them what they got out of it.

He said seek and you shall find. He doesn't always answer out loud but he does answer prayer in many different ways and in his own time. When I look I always find answers to my questions and not on Yahoo Answers!
