Just tell him marriage is a human institution or tradition or custom that humans have found worked very well in raising up a family: 1 dad, 1 mom to look after the kids who need support until they are 21 years old. Cats do not have such a custom becuase in cat world, kitten need only mama cat to get milk from when they are small kittens. But Kittens grow up really fast - not like human babies. Kittens don't need mama's milk after just 8 weeks... and once they are a few months old, they can hunt already since mama cat shows them how. When the cat is a year old, it can have its own kitties. So, cats don't get married becuase they don't need to be around for their kitties forever - not like with us human beings. We need to raise our families for a long long time... so men and women who want to raise a family get married.

Since this is such an important issue to him, I would try this tack. The kittens (I hope they are spayed and neutered) are very young and aren't ready to be married until the are older. Kittens mature sexually around 6 months, but don't look like grown up cats until about a year. So until that time he could plan a cat wedding with construction paper, tissue paper and some leftover holiday trimmings (nothing elaborate). He could also pick some special ribbon for the male cat to where as a bow tie and maybe several ribbons to attach to the female cat's collar to make a train of sorts. The older gentleman cats can be confirmed bachelors or grandpas or anything that might reflect his surroundings. It is really sweet to see someone his age looking beyond himself. He sounds like a fine young man!

That's very cute! I would have told him that they do get married but at night when no one is around. Perhaps a more practical answer is better: some cats prefer not to marry whereas others do. It's just hard for humans to tell which are married because cats do not wear wedding rings.

Maybe you should try to tell him that weddings are a human way of celebrating that two people have decided to be together for life. we like to celebrate lots of things but animals their fine just hanging out together and playing with toys. Kids can understand way more then we give them credit for.

I think its a cute question. If posed with the same question from my son, I think I would answer with animals cannot communicate with us. They can't give their consent to be in a legal marriage. Although, these days consent doesn't matter, it matters what sex you and your partner are. But I do wish you luck with these tricky questions and the ones that are sure to follow.

What a cute question. ^_^
Eight years old is too old to tell him lies; he'll be in sex ed in a few years.
You can tell him some animals do get married (meaning they mate for life). Or you can tell him it's because animals don't have to follow the same rules we do because they aren't civilized and we are. (If you're religious, you can say it's because they don't have souls and we do.)

I gotta say...your son is 8 and really should understand the concept of marriage.
I would review with him what marriage is. It is for an adult man and an adult woman. They marry to spend their lives together and to care for children. They work to feed themselves.
Cats are actually quite independent, and while they have playmates, I can't say with certainty that they are the type of animals that come up with life long lovemates. The role of the kitty is to play and enjoy life. They need us as adults to help them. Your answer is cute, but honesty is important. Have you dressed the female in a dress? Has he seen any of them clothed?
I think more than likely he'll grow out of it and realize it is silly.

That is so cute :)
Cats are solitary creatures and only get together for reproduction. Maybe you can tell him that they don't get along very well if they are married and don't want to fight all the time?

Give him the proper answer...that humans marry for legal reasons to protect themselves and their children...whereas animals do not buy houses, cars, and have bank accounts
