I was looking at a Nikon d200 and it was amazing but do I really need all that power and do I really need to spend all that money? What do you recomend for the casual photographer who uses the camera to make a little bank on the side but is my no means a true professional?

Nikon D80 without a doubt. Yes I own one. Yes I am biased. The day I got mine I was at work and I had a major event to cover that night. The question burned in my mind all afternoon, do I risk using a brand new camera? Or do I continue on with my D50. I risked the D80 and from the word go this was a great camera. The D80 is newer than the D200, has the same resolution and is cheaper than the D200. Mainly the D200 has a metal body whereas the D80 is plastic but let me tell you this does not feel like a cheap camera at all. It is a quality product.

I thoroughly and unreservedly recommend the D80 to you.

I was just looking for similar information and found this article: http://www.anandtech.com/digitalcameras/showdoc.aspx?i=2896

Looks like Pentax K10D and K100D are 2 excellent cameras for the price. Personally I am eyeing the K100D kit right now, there is a $50 mail-in rebate valid till Jan 9.

good question. no one here can help you. only you know what you will be usiing the camera for.
so if you need the features on that camera then buy it.
however search online for digital camera reviews.
five.tv/gadgetshow did a SLR test last series and i think the results are still available on the website http://www.five.tv/gadgetshow see what that says. I can't recall the details as i'm not in to photography anymore and did not see the review, however i did see a link last week on the gadgetshow home page.

I hope that helps.

I second the Pentax thought. I shoot the K10D and for less money than D80 you have a much better camera.
