So i am just gettin out of the military and am trying to be a police officer once i get out. when i intially got into the military i had to get a special request because as a juvenile i commited a minor crime and paid a fine ( i drove my drunk friend home in his car, which turned out to be stolen). While in the military i got a dui on base. My questions is can i be a police officer? Please let me know!!

If your juvenile record did not disqualify you from joining the military, then it likely won't disqualify you from getting into a police department. Police Background investigators typically get access to the DOJ rap sheets, so don't even think about withholding anything. They'll find it.

The DUI, unless it was a felony, won't be a hang-up. They want to know every offense, but mainly pay attention to felonies, and the major disqualifying crimes involve drugs, weapons, and violence.

If anyone says that they won't affect you, they are wrong. It will depend on your state's law enforcement governing body. You will need to contact them or try to research it to find out. Usually they have guidelines stating what you can and can't be convicted of, how long ago it could have been, and all that.

Most state law enforcement governing bodies disqualify you if you have been convicted of any felonies right off the bat. However, the good thing is that most of those that disqualify you right off the bat have a way to appeal it and waiver the situation. You will need to contat them and tell them what happened and what kind of punishment you recieved. Don't lie cause they will already know all of this. Then they will look at a few other things and decide whether or not to allow you to have the certification as a police officer.

Good luck with it...

no they will not disqualify you, have many freinds in the police force like yourself.
You should also ask yourself the question "if you were a police officer and commited a crim such as taxation fruad or drunk driving would you get kicked out of the police force?" of course not

Probably not. The DUI will probably be the factor if the driving the stolen car doesn't get you first.

i wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure you will get the job, but i know that if you're over 18 and commit a crime, you can't join the FBI, so if the rules are the same, then I'm sorry

Neither is likely to affect you unless the military gives you a dishonorable discharge...which they won't
