Painful, painful ache... I use to have RLS (restless leg syndrome) pretty bad and the spasms I got was horrible.
It sounds like you suffer from charlie horses, though. Every once in a while, I also got charlie horses in my calves... OUCH! Than the pain lasted a day or so. It felt like my muscles got twisted up in a knot.
I guess I was vitamin deficient. I was told to eat a lot of potassium every day (bananas or potato peels) the natural way, along with calcium (milk or yogurt) and a good multivitamin with magnesium. This combination helps me sleep like a baby. If you don't (or can't), when you are resting, make sure that you stretch with your heel out - don't point your toes! Charlie horses get worse that way.

I've found that the best and quickest way to get rid of leg cramps is to stand on the offending leg and put all my weight on it. It can hurt a bit when you first put the pressure on your leg, but I've found that the pain goes away faster this way than if I let it be to go away on it's own.
Also, when I have leg cramps regularly, I can pretty much count on one of two problems being the culprit... my potassium levels are low or I'm dehydrated. If these might be your problem, there are a couple of things you can do to help ease the cramps.
Increase your water intake. Instead of that can of soda or glass of iced tea, make it water. It can be flavored (if you're not too fond of water), so long as it's water!
For the potassium, yes bananas are a good and easy source of potassium. If you're in the mood for potatoes, though, the skin of the potato is also a great source for potassium.
While you're trying the home remedies, give your doctor a call and tell him/her what's going on. It might be something that he can or will need to address.
Good luck.

electrolyte imbalances can cause calf spasms. Especially calcium. Talk to your doctor.

I'd consider magnesium actually. Most people don't get enough in their diet.
