They were always labeled AH in my recollection. UH is the designation for Utility Helicopter, AH = Attack Helicopter. AH-64 D is the Longbow version of the Apache...etc.

As for the pace of promotions, I honestly couldn't tell you, but for the difficulty in becoming a WO and flying one well, that's up to you. If you have some college and have a good enough score you can go in as a WO and sign up for flight school. It's all dependent on your skills, smarts and abilities. Being a 15Y won't really have a lot of impact on your becoming a pilot.

The standard NATO designation for a helo with the primary purpose of delivering air-to-ground ordnance is AH, for Attack Helicopter.
As someone who workd on military vehicles, I would call them Whole Lot of Maintenance.

Apache or the modification, the Apache longbow. They also fly Cobra attack choppers, and lest we forget the blackhawk (more transport)
