I used to get seasonal insomnia and have tried lots of things for sleeping.
Very hot shower or bath right before bed to relax your muscles.
A tea with mild sedative properties such as chamomile. Sleepytime and Tension Tamer from Celestial Seasonings are both good.
Rainbow light has an herbal extract blend called Relax, you would find this at a health food store. My current favorite for nights I can't sleep is Kava extract, but be careful, that stuff is powerful.
Sometimes I'd take a PM pain reliever, but they make my limbs tingle and I didn't like that sensation. For otc sleeping meds my favorite was Unisom, haven't taken it in years - since I discovered Kava.
I also tried melatonin for a while about 12 years ago, which worked great, but I became uncomfortable with it after reading about it being a hormone and noticing that the pills I had actually deteriorated really fast.
Hope you find something here that helps!

Rosa's totally on a roll! I agree with most of it!
The best thing that has worked for me is breathing. There are other things that do the trick - but when you master your breathing it seems like everything else falls into place. Inhale deeply, loosen the muscles one by one, you're gone before you realize you were on your way there.
Sweet Dreams.
I promised myself I would be sleep 9:30, 10:00, 10:30 at the latest. So off I go.
Best of luck!
Maybe one more answer...

I feel your pain. Well, I've taken over the counter and prescription sleep meds before, and they worked for me but only while I was taking them. I've been suffering from chronic insomnia for years and here's how I've got it beat:
-I force myself to wake up at the same time 7 days a week. 6:00am no matter what. If you're just starting, this is going to SUCK big time, and you REALLY have to force yourself up.
-Every night I have a ritual where I take a hot shower, drink chamomile tea - it still tastes like flowers to me, but it seems to calm my mind, and get in my bed somewere between 10:00pm and 10:15pm. Sometimes I have to read for little while, but I've gotten so much better that as soon as I pick up a book I'm ready for lights out. If reading does not work, I do some meditating. It works wonders - I have a cd player with meditation music, I sometimes do a religious meditation or just a feel-good yoga type, either does the trick for me.
-BIG THING. Its hard at first, but don't watch tv in your bed. I used to be so stubborn and swore that I couldn't fall asleep without it. I'm a tv junkie so I record everything I like then watch until around 9:30 or so before I start my before-bed routine.
-Another thing that seems to have helped, is I made my bedroom more sleep-friendly. I lock my cat out at night so she won't inadvertently wake me in the middle of the night, I have room-darkening shades, I change my bedsheets very frequently - it may be just me, but I love getting into bed when my sheets smell laundry-fresh. I bought one of those fancy gentle-wake alarm clocks that wakes me up with lights and nature sounds (its just my preference, I HATE being jolted awake.) I think it was a rip off in general, but I was desperate to find a cure for my sleeplessness...
-Last but not least, when I was first starting my new routines I took 1mg of Melatonin every night about 10 minutes before I wanted to go to sleep. After about a week or so, I did not need it anymore.
I almost forget something. I learned how to chill out! I would lay down and so much info was racing in my mind it felt like I was going to explode. Learn to let go of the things you cannot change, and if you're a religious person, prayer can calm you and soothe your soul - letting you relax and go to sleep!
Good luck!

i also have sleeping problems, but not always, i think you have a lot of pressure, all you need is relax, doing some sports or something you like when you cant sleep. dont just lay on bed and wait for sleep, it would be worse when you just lay there and found you are still awake. and try to make the sleeping room more comfortable.if you feel sleepy during the daytime try as best as you can not to sleep.
