How old should the kitten be? I have 2 kittens that are both about 5 months old (and getting ready to be fixed next month!) and I was about wondering how old they should be before I start giving them cat food instead of kitten food? They are both healthy, not over waight or under waight.

Dear Random, I can only share my experience with you. Over 61 years of being owned by cats and most have had longevity, several lived well into their 20's. Since back in the day there was no such thing as kitten food our cats all were raised with Purina (Friskies brand and Fancy Feast) Nine lives, Kal Kan (which may be Wiskas now) and Kitty Queen (no longer around). There are alot of newer kinds on the market today that are much more expensive (expensive doesn't always mean better). Sadly I had to give my 18 year old Samantha that final gift of love last October and have her euthanized after she suffered a massive stroke. Now I am down to just 1 girl and at 16 she gets Fancy Feast since I can spend a little more and it was rated one of the top cat foods. Before that the two of them would split a can of Friskies twice a day. I hope this is of help to you and best of luck. Happy Holidays

I would say you can start feeding them regular cat food when they are 6 months old. I have raised lots and lots of cats and kittens and have always fed all of mine regular cat food and have not had any problems with nutrition. As a matter of fact, I currently have 4 kittens who are 5 weeks old who have been eating both hard and soft regular cat food for about the last week or two. I think for the most part this is a gimmick for pet food manufacturer's to be able to market a higher priced product that is specially labeled but has basically the same nutritional value as the regularly priced cat food. Good luck! By the way, when you bring them home from the vets from having them fixed remember to be very comforting to them. It will be a very stressful and uncomfortable time for them.

You should switch over when they are about 9-12 months old. Kitten food is filled with great nutrients for a growing kitty, but it is also very fattening! You dont want to feed it to them for any longer than 12 months! Once they are about 9 months Id start slowly mixing the adult food with the kitten food and slowly increase the amount of the adult food until you are no longer feeding the kitten food. This way you can avoid diarrhea. Also since cats are picky eaters and kitten food tastes better than adult food, doing this will train them to like the adult food! Good luck!

I have raised 4 kittens into adult hood and I was always told by the vet that one year is when they are full grown I would say about 10 and half 11 month mark start mixing thier food with adult cat food and slowly up the amount of adult to the portion of kitten until they are on adult only. I do suggest dry cat food it is better for them than the wet. wet cat food makes them have more fur balls and other issue with the urinary tract and such. Good luck with them and I wish you many years of love and happiness with your new family members =)

As soon as the kitten is a cat and the formula isn't too different. Or buy the small nags of food and sample until you've found teh right one that you can your cat both like.
