Are the differences just in skill or experience, or are there psychological differences between them as well? Which one would be more easily deterred?

Ok, who knows why your asking this question, let alone why im answering it.. From what I know skill and experience both have to do with it. Professionals are those ones that know how and what to do quickly and efieciently. They leave no marks, no clues and no tracebacks, and they never get caught. Their the ones you see on unsolved mysteries from 1984!! Amateurs get caught over stupid stuff like fingerprints (even i know to use gloves) or they dropped their ID or something. They don't know what they're doing and barely know what they want. They have no plan and are sloppy. Hope it helps...

You've pretty much answered your own question. Professional thieves have more experience, and therefore will probably have greater confidence in their abilities. Amateur thieves would be easier to deter, as they may not know their own capabilities, and may scare easier than the professional.
