I'd say at least 5 years.

I was engaged after 2 1/2 years, he wanted to do it after a few months, but I was just a kid, so I opted for more time. I'd say it doesn't matter the time frame. You could know someone for years and not really know them at all, or you could date a month and find lasting happiness. Now a days it's the "toss a coin" affect! Just make sure your both ready and on the same page in life, that's all that matters. And may I add, one should not pressure the other, other wise your headed for regrets!

against the odds, I'd say maybe 6months. However, only with the date of wedding set another 1 1/2 years. Totaling 2 years.

Sometimes the attraction felt in the beginning of a relationship, can be so awesome, that it feels as though it will never change. (at least we don't want it to) if at 6months, you felt the same as when two years have past, then you may have a happy future together.

Good Luck. And Happy New Year 2007

Know everything about that person. Their family, friends, likes and dislikes. What their goals in life are and if your able to agree with their goals. If your willing to make sacrifices things in life to make the spouse happy. Love that person, honor that person. If the spouse gets sick, helpless from illness, still be able to be there through hell and high water for that person. Be as one, forsake all others for that person regardless of who it is. So, however long it takes for you and the one person to feel like this about each other, that is how long it takes before getting engaged. Just be totally sure without a shadow of a doubt. Love and marriage should not be selfish and self centered on each partners part. Good Luck.

You've got it wrong my friend. It is not a question of how long but rather, how much? As long as you know enough about your date to want to make a commitment that's all that matters. How long this takes depends on the frequency of your dating. Your openness with one another can go a long way to help you both understand each other, to put your trust in each other and truly want to begin making plans for a lifetime of togetherness.

You can reach this stage quickest only by total transparency in your relationship while you are courting.

So the answer to your question can not be got from others but is within your own control. Best of luck.

Hey Man, please don't rush in. Making a decision to get married is very important, so I think you should definitely give yourself some major time--nothing less than a year--before making that decision. By then, you should have seen her without her makeup--and I'm not talking about her face paint. You will know the real her by then. You know how new relationships go through this "impression" stage before reality sets in. Give yourself at least 6 months for that stage to wear off and 6 to see if you can deal with the real person--habits and hangups--for the rest of your life.

If it is love, Take atleast an year to get to know eachother well and then get married. If it is an arranged marriage, 2-3 months and then get married and know eachother still more and learn more. Coz, if you take more time before marriage, you may like eachother at the begining and later you might feel bore and the life might get spoiled, as far as in india. So if arranged married. 3 months are fine and then marry and get to know well eachother.

It depends on how long it takes to really get to know them. If you spend a lot of time together and communicate well, then it could be 6 months. If you are not in a hurry and want to take your time to get to know each other, then 2 years.
