Hi there. Its really nice to see someone as young as yourself being interested in one of the most challenging and misunderstood professions of our time. First, being an accountant is more than just "keeping the books". Accounting encompasses many areas of specialisation from audit, tax, business services to the more hybrid and cutting-edge stuff like corporate finance, recovery and insolvency practices. Accountants are no longer seen as just maintaiting an entity's ledgers, nowadays, the profession takes on a more "advisory role"- the skills that you must possess are an eye for detail, good communication & analytical skills (as you would be required to interpret financial data and render your advise to the clients based on this). I dont quite agree with the most of the other respondents who say you should have excellent math skills....what with computers and calculators, you would be letting technology do all the numbers crunching for you; not your brain. Put simply, your job as an accountant is to look @ this data and troubleshoot. Hope that helps & good luck!!

Well, accounting is basically a secretarial job. You know, working the desk at some office, keeping book, having computer skills and answering phones, and working with the payroll, the thing that the employees get paid by. It's mostly about working with money too. You have to keep track of all the financial paperwork that comes with the company you are working for. It's best to take math classes to help u with counting money, computer classes, for the computer skills, and maybe some bookkeeping classes if you can take those in high school, and also a few foreign language classes because it's always a plus when u can speak different languages because it helps when smoeone foreign calls and can't speak english. Hope i helped...

Take as many math and business classes as you can. Both of these classes will help you understand accounting better. Also try doing a job shadow with an accountant at an agency or company that you might want to work with so that you can see what a day in their life is like - this will also help you to narrow down what type of company or industry you would like to work in.

My boyfriend also wanted to be an accountant. Just make sure and stock up on all the math classes you can. math is going to be the most important part of accounting. Also start using programs like quickbooks which is an accounting software for small companies. But about college, there are programs made just for accounting so you don't have to worry about that. Good luck.

Read Accounting for Dummies ( no offense it's a real book ), and then take Consumer Math in High School, plus read other accounting related books, there are tons of them at the library.
