We already been to the vet in the past and she was operated on (lanced) and given antibiotics. But now it's back and we really can't afford another operation. Will cleaning it out with a peroxide solution hurt the dog? We're desperate!

Hello my mother has a Yorkie as well and we also a mini schnauzer. If you get your dog groomed the next time you take the dog in ask them to clean out her ears and also clean the hair out of the ear canal. Some breeds have hair that grows in the canal and that breeds bacteria and then causing the infection! That is how he got our dogs from having ear infections. I really hope this works for you. Also I would ask the vet about the peroxide.

If the dog has hair growing in the ear canal the vet or groomer can show you how to remove the hair. It's a simple procedure. Once a week you need to clean your dogs ears and especially after bathing. You can buy ear cleaning solutions at the vets office for around 8 dollars. The vet or tech can show you how to properly clean the ears. You can also call the vet to see if he/she will just give an other prescription for antibiotics for reoccurance of infection until you can obtain the information for ear care.

Not sure from facts given which kind of ear infection? Normally, dogs have problems with ear mites or yeast infections. You refer to "lancing" which is cutting to open up a infected area to clean it out. Then antibiotics to cure infected area.

If the old lanced area is puffy and full of infection again and not down inside the ear as such then a diluted peroxide solution applied with Qtip could be used to clean. Betadine is the preferred for any wound, cuts, scrapes. Neosporin is safe also.
This is only if not a situation down inside the ear canal, but on the outside of ear or right inside easily seen.

I am not familiar with a situation for lancing down in the canal itself and over the years we have had 1000s to the vet for many reasons. Treat a lot of ear mites and yeast infections. If this past surgery involved the ear drum then you do need to call the vet for sure. Would not advise you to attempt treatment. She might just need antibiotics.

Our Dachshund had issues with a chronic ear infection a few years back. The vet suggested to us that we put cotton balls in his ears during bath time as it would prevent water from getting into the ear canal and creating a moist area, which is a common cause of ear infections. Just make sure you put the cotton in just enuf to hold in place, but not too deep. It merely needs to keep the water from running right into the ears. Once we started doing this with our Doxie, he's not had an infection since.

I would definitely not recommend peroxide solutions, could cause the dog to go deaf (the popping sound in the ear). however, your vet should carry some safe cleaning solutions for your dog. Has she been tested for allergies? That can also be a cause. (I only know this because I had a dog with severe allergies, we had to give him Benedryl for it. . . NOTE: talk to your vet before doing any treatments, and also, dont be afraid of second opinions.)

This could be due to food allergies. Try the foods at http://www.frrco.com/121668 because they are free of a lot of the additives that cause allergies which can result in ear infections.

Also, try getting some ear cleaner/dryer from the pet store. This can help as well. Make sure when she is groomed that water does not get into her ears, which can lead to infections as well.

Doing the above should get this under control. Good luck!

Google this:

Apple Cider Vinegar + Dogs -- you'll get a site that will advise you about how to use vinegar to help prevent ear infections.

Now about curing the current infection, I believe at minimum antibiotics will be required. Time to see the vet.

You should see if Otomax will help, it is a perscription for dog ear infections. You can order it on 1800 pet meds cheaper than your vet, but they ultimately have to authorize it.. Better than peroxide, and I hope you are not pouring it in the little guys ear!
