Smoke Free Anniversary is January 10th
1. Have you quit smoking and did you use the patch? did it help? I didn't use the patch, but did use some of the generic nicorette gum.
2. What other things helped with quitting? Learned what my triggers were. I got rid of the ashtrays and put the lighters out of sight. I also wouldn't eat as much food, so I wouldn't have that post meal craving to smoke. I prayed like crazy.
3. How much did you smoke? I smoked a pack a day. Menthols at that.
4. When do the cravings stop? Sigh. Never. They aren't as strong, but you have them pretty much forever. My father in law stopped smoking some 30 years ago and said that one puff is all it would take for him. I'm having cravings off and on still. The fact is, your brain remembers what gives it pleasure and nicotine does that. So it'll always have a sweet spot for nicotine. Not to mention the smoking dreams don't help ya lol. You can be sure to have those.
5. Have you tried a drug such as Wellbutrin?.. or similar? No, I didn't take Wellbutrin. I was already on Paxil at that time I believe, but it didn't help me out at all. It'll probably help you put on more weight if anything.
Good luck!!

1. Yes I quit, I didn't use the patch
2. Drinking lots of water, avoiding "triggers" that I associated with smoking primarily drinking coffee.
3. 1 pack a day maybe 2 if I was boozin'
4. About a 3 days
5. No drugs
If your serious about quitting using the patches is like an IV form of nicotine, they just don't work IMHO. Drink lots of water - like a gallon a day this helps the nicotine get out of your body quicker. Chew a lot of gum - take it one day at a time. Your not quitting your just not smoking today. Also I took my cig. money and put it in a jar everyday I didn't smoke and once a week I would treat myself to something nice like a shirt or CD as a reward.
The cost of smoking alone is staggering: $4 a day * 7 days a week = $28 a week
Over a $100 a month! which is about what I pay for medical insurance now. ;-)

1. wouldn't recommend the patch...may cause blood clots....especially if u cheat and smoke to.
2. Take gum, every time you get a craving chew a piece of gum instead.
3. only smoked about a pack/pack and a half.
4. They never really stop.....after a few days the smell of others smoking is terrible......But the cravings sneak up on u in the worst possible moments. They get less frequent but when they hit they get harder to fight.
5. Haven't tried the drugs...but have friends that say wellbutrin made them get sick when smoked, but they still smoked when were taking the pills.

I had a stroke in November (Imagine that, and I'm 50!). I spent 6 days in the hospital, my first time ever spending the night in a hospital --I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys root canals...
During my stay at the hospital, I was given a patch each day. When they let me escape, I figured I already went six days, why stop now.
I started smoking when I was about 17 and up until now, had never tried to quit. While smoking, I averaged between two and three packs a day.
I just went out and purchased more patches, use them religiously, and simply choose not to purchase anymore cigarettes.
I can tell you that it's only been since about November 10th that I quit. What I do is go for a walk after eating, and I keep celery and carrots here by the computer.
I can't comment about the nicotine addiction because with the patch, that's still going on.
But the habit is a pain in the ***! You don't realize it, but it's nuts! I'll be sitting here, and without even thinking about it, I'll pick up a carrot like it's a cigarette and start looking around my desk for a lighter!
My behaviour in that respect is so funny, it's embarrassing. For me that's also a further resolve to continue this non-smoking.
Think about it. I don't have a cigarette addiction, my cigarettes have a human habit! I just don't want anything having that much control over me (I'm not married...) But you don't realize just how pervasive this habit is in your life until you try to quit.
I think the key, though, is to develop different behaviours. As I said, after I eat, I go for a walk. I go out for about 30 minutes, and not only is it exercize, but when I come back, I don't have that urge to smoke anylonger.
Go for it, and good luck!

My wife quit smoking 2 months ago using a prescription drug called Chantix. She smoked close to a pack a day. She rarely gets cravings anymore. You actually take the 1 pill for 7 days while smoking and on the eighth day you take 2 pills. The cost without insurance was $120 for a one month starter pack and $120 for the additional 30 day paks. She was only allowed a total of 90 days. She actually stopped needing the pills after 5 weeks. With my insurance the cost was $40 for the starter and $24 for the additional packs.

First, I applaud you for wanting to quit smoking. At least I assume that is why you are asking questions. Personally, I have been a non-smoker for almost 6 years now. I used to smoke one pack a day. I was hypnotized & it worked instantanously. No cravings at all. Some people might think being hyponotized is a crock because mind over matter might not work for everyone. If you have a thought set in your mind to accomplish something: you are already one step closer to success. I also recognize that smoking is an physiolocially additivie habit. Remember tobacco is not pure-- think of all the chemical additives that are introduced to your body. I am not one who believes in taking meds -- but if it is a means to the end -- so be it. Continue to educate yourself and ask many questions. I suspect that you already know you want to quit. Best wishes

I quit cold turkey after smoking a pack and a half a day for 27 years. Had to psych myself up. Didn't have to work hard at that after watching a friend die of lung cancer.
It isn't as if those cigarettes might kill you. They will. You need to stop. All the crutches in the world won't stop for you.
The craving doesn't stop, it just gets less as time goes on.
Prove to yourself that you are strong willed. Do it

self control helps and keep yourself busy bydoing and keeping yourself busy
1. i quit without the patch
2. not being around others who smoke. disassociating eating, driving, drinking with smoking
3. maybe 3-5 a day. cigarettes. not packs
4. for me, after i decided not to pick another one up
5. i have depression. i'm on 300mg of wellbutrin. when used for smoking (zyban), the usual dose is like ... 3mg. depression is the worse thing, but quitting the habit is the best thing that's come out of it.
i still smoked after i started my wellbutrin. i stopped when i was going to see my boyfriend in france (the county of smokers) he doesn't smoke. the minute i told myself that i was not going to buy a new pack was when i stopped. the urges eventually stopped. i'm sure i had a whole lot easier time on my dose! but now, when i bum a hit from my friends, the taste makes me want to puke! i don't know how i did it before ...
oh, filling the gap that the cigarette filled in my day to day was hard too.... it'll be 1 year this feb.
