Your own common sense is what gives you individuality and personal power. Isn't religion is just a shortcut to thinking?

Esther did not answer my question, for some reason I get the feeling she doesn't have an answer.

to ":)" my question was not a "yes" or "no" question...you have to THINK to produce an answer

To "bluff_michael": I don't think you understand my question, I know religion is a guideline for behavior and that is the very basis of my question: Why follow the guideline? Why not follow your brain?

To GodsKnite: basically what you are saying is that the bible is just a source of reason (one that might be considered more reliable than common sense because of its age). The problem with your argument is that people do not use the bible in the way you describe, they take the actual stories literally and they follow it word for word and apply it to modern concepts (like abortion and stem cell research) both of which have not been around for thousands of years. So, although your answer is pretty good it has flaws (I gave you thumbs up but I wouldn't vote your answer as the best)

Because that is how people are brought up. They don't know any better. Instead of researching and asking thoughtful questions about their spirituality, they let themselves go and give in to blind faith.
Religion is the main reason for 90% of all wars that have ever existed. Religious faith is the reason Palestinians and Jews hate each other. Instead of working together to find a common ground and find a way to peacefully co-exist, they bicker back and forth and try to destroy each other. Religion is the reason for the 911 attacks. It is the reason for the crusades a millennium ago, where countless innocents were killed because they didn't believe in Christ.
In my opinion, organized religion is the root of all evil. The greediest organizations on the planet are religious in nature.

People need something to believe in, to feel accepted. Religion gives that to them, but for a price. I hope this long answer somehow answers your question. Have a great day!

I think the problem with this lies in the fact that there are some Christians who use no logic or reasoning to to back up why they believe what they do. They just throw out "The Bible says so." or "My parents said so." It is possible to be a good Christian, but challenge the 2000 year old standards we are to live by. Finding your own truths so you can have a truly unique and personal relationship with God is what Christianity, and more specifically, the Reformation, was founded on.

Common sense has its place, but one must remember the source when considering common sense as an answer to any given issue.

Common sense has its source in reason. The reason that each person uses is a correlation to their experiences. Experiences are not always accurate. For instance, if I saw a magician turn a hankerchief into a dove, my experience would tell me that doves therefore come from hankerchiefs. However, I know that doves do not come from hankerchiefs. Reason, as beautiful a tool as it is, must have a credible source to be effective, otherwise it's random guesses based on experiences that may or may not be accurate.

So, our common sense must be tempered by more reliable sources of reason, and not merely by itself. The Bible is one of those sources. tested throughout the course of several thousand years, and verified through hundreds of thousands of translators and historians, the Bible is an excellent source for reason. People who do not even agree with the Bible as a whole will still use the lessons taught in the Bible, because they know them to be true.

Now for the fun part. Why do we trust in reason? It is very simple really, we trust in reason because it is reasonable. That is a circular argument, and according to its own rules, reason is an unreliable source of knowledge.

Common sense: sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts

So because I disagree I have no common sense? As if being Christian means I don't do my own personal research. No...not even close...I do lots and lots of research since it's something that I enjoy. I happen to believe God's word lines up. That's all
Just because "religious people" disagree doesn't mean they are ignorant or idiots.

Religion is real. Because of God we are here and have been given a brain to think common sense with, but still we must always remember who gave us that brain!

Well I am not sure. I guess it is because they want to believe blindly. I am a born again Christian. I don't put religion ahead of common sense. However, I do allow room for the supernatural.

The bible actually says that its better to believe than think...

Proverbs 3:5-Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

I'd only accept a religion if it made sense to me. I'm not going to follow something I think illogical.

If common sense gives so much personal power, then why are so many people so messed up?
