I just got engaged about 2 1/2 months ago and we are planning to get married in 2 or 3 years from now. When do we start preparing for our BIG DAY (wedding)?

First of all, congrats!

It depends on how you define "planning". You should start the basics as soon as possible. (Choosing a date/season, choosing colors, considering your budget, discussing formality...) Believe me, you'll regret it if you just put everything off for a year or two.

If you need alot of help, many planning sites offer "checklists" with different tasks for every month. Of course, you can do any task at any time; nothing is set in stone, and every couple works at a different pace.

Hope that helps!

Congrats! If you have a specific day in mind and it is a Saturday I would recommend booking the hall right away. My fiance and I said we wanted to get married on 07-07-07 for years. Most halls were booked by last May. (We ended up with 7-21-07). So if you have a special day, it wouldn't hurt to put a deposit down. Then again, if it's a small wedding or on a Friday or Sunday, you have a lot of time! If you're excited and you just can't wait, you can get started on the guest list and general ideas. I use the Knot website for my planning- they have helpful checklists and budget trackers.

I wouldn't worry about anything until at least a year out. If you know some of your vendors book 2 years out then you should book them and then not worry about it. Once you've booked your vendors a wedding can be planned in as little as 3 months. If you start stressing now you will be miserable by the time your wedding come along.

About a year before the date. If you tried to book stuff now, people probably wouldn't even take the reservation. The exception would be if you live in a place like New York, and want to have the wedding at whatever the most popular place in NY would be, then I'd probably pick a date and reserve something.

The larger the wedding, the more time to plan. As a rule, however, you should start booking services a year ahead of time.
Halls should be deposited a year and a half, florist 6 months.

You are waiting too long. Get married this year or early next year, unless there is an urgent reason not to. Start planning now by going to the library or bookstore and getting a wedding planning book and reading it.

At least one year before. Although you can still have a look around now, that way you can find the best deals and work out a budget. Just don't over do it now you have plenty of time. maybe get a scrap book so you have everything in the one place.

It really depends on where you live, how picky you want to be for vendors, and what time of year. I'd say in cities like NYC and LA that you'd need a minimum of one year to plan...if not two years. I live in Portland, OR and we planned ours in 10 months and had no problems with getting the vendors we wanted...we got married in October. Good luck and have fun!!!
