My mom and grandparents both have Yorkies and no they are not hard to care for. Keep in mind they will need grooming a lot depending on the hair type. There are Silkies which have very soft hair and this is almost like human hair with a very nice shine. Then there is the coarse hair more of a wiry type and these dogs are very easy to brush and keep the knots out of the hair. I would also recommend that you use a leave in conditioner in your Yorkies hair. Our groomer told us to use Johnson and Johnson baby detangler. And you can liter train any dog but it is going to take time and patience!

My little guy is 15. I do not know that you can litter box train them, but there are doggie "pads" you put on the floor. The best way to train a dog is to constantly take them outside, let them sniff around and when they go outside, PRAISE them. It's your job to make sure to take them out on a consistent basis. Even when you think he/she may not need to go out, take them out. Eventually, they will learn that that is the place to go. Your dog will have accidents, it still happens to this day, not often, but it's an accident, don't punish the dog. You can also crate your dog when you are away, generally, they will not go in a confined area, or a bedding area. To crate train, start slow. Put your dog in and say something like "kennel up!", give a treat and close the door. Stay there in front of the crate for several minutes each time, take out the pup and give them love. Do this 3-4 times a day. Then after a couple of days, leave the dog for 5 minutes, even if he/she barks, whines, do not go back for 5 minutes, then repeat the love/hugs when you let him/her out. Remember the "kennel up" will be associated with a treat, so he/she will know that the crate is a reward area, not a punishment area. Increase your time away from the crate each day, put a towel down in the crate for comfort. If you are gone more than 4 hours, put a water bottle like they have for hamsters in there, not a bowl or you may come home to a soggy doggy. Good luck!
