Foster parenting is a serious commitment. It requires giving the gift of unconditional love to children and youth who may never have experienced love of any kind and who may not know how to accept it. It also requires the foster parent to be able to bond and attach to children quickly, but still be able to separate from those children when they are returned to their birth/legal family or moved to a more permanent family situation. Foster parents are selected from applicants: (1) who are single or who have been married for at least two years, (2) who range in age from 21 to 65, (3) who maintain standards acceptable to DCFS, and (4) who pass safety, health and background checks.-

When children are taken from their biological parent for reasons of neglect, abuse, or perhaps bios were arrested and there's no relatives to care for the children, the children go to foster parents. As foster parents you go through a training and licensing process, fingerprinting, etc. Then when you are licensed you get a call from the placement person who says " I have a such-and-such age child who needs a place to go . . . " and you say yes or no. It could be for a few days until a relative steps forward or it could be a couple years before mom earns the kids back, or they could end up being adoptable. You are licensed through your county and you recieve a stipend for each foster child for the amount of time they are with you. IT's not much, just enough to cover costs. BAsically a reimbursement.

Foster care is a system by which adults care for minor children who are not able to live with their parents. In the United States, many states have provisions for voluntary or involuntary foster care. Voluntary foster care may be in circumstances where a parent is unable or unwilling to care for a child. For instance, a child may have behavioral problems requiring specialized treatment or the parent might have a problem which results in a temporary or permanent inability to care for the child(ren). Involuntary foster care may be implemented when a child is removed from the normal caregiver for his/her own safety.

Foster care is a unique situation of temporary family-based care to children who cannot remain in their own home due to child protection concerns or exceptional special needs.

The Foster Care Program is based on the belief that a family is the best environment for raising a child. A foster family is a temporary family for a child whose birth family is unwilling or unable to assume full responsibility for the child. The goal of foster care is to return the child to his or her own family as soon as possible.
