Ok, I have recently got enagaged to my boyfriend and I am absolutely over the moon! BUT I have found myself in a bit of a situation. We are currently in Australia on a 1 year visa which runs out in April (were both from the UK). Therefore we were thinking we could get married here! We would ask parents to come over, but it would be a small intimate wedding - something unusual by the harbour, and i'm sure would be lovely - this way when we get back to the uk we will be able to start a fresh and save upto buy a house etc. We already have our trip home booked to travel round Thailand/Malyasia so this would be a ready-made honeymoon. The other option is to wait and get married in the UK, this way would please our friends and family, and I always imagined myself having a big traditional wedding, the problem is, lot'sof our friends, family dont get along, we would also be very short or cash as we would still need to save for a house....I cant make up my mind & don't want to regret my choice.

You kind of could do both. You could get married on the water by a ship captain - I think they take care of the arrangements for you, or you could contact the local city hall and ask about getting a marriage license. The thing is though that they might not issue a marriage license to non-citizens - which is why I mention the sea captain idea.

Then when you get home you could have a big public wedding if you want - or just a big party and simple ceremony for friends and family and put the bulk of your money toward a house (always good).

When all is said and done, a big wedding can be stressful and expensive for 1 night's celebration - and a private wedding and honeymoon home sounds terribly romantic. I would do the private wedding and then have a big party if you want to bring your friends and family together - maybe in the spring when you can do it in someone's garden instead of renting a hall.

Peace!

If you decide to have it in Oz then you are basically putting the potential costs on your parents and other people in your inner circle who would have to be there. If you have it in the UK then you are removing some of that burden from the people who matter the most. If you want to avoid strife there are other ways to keep the turnout low that don't involve your parents buying a 1000 euro plane ticket. There are ways to have a large wedding without spending a fortune. I don't know about the UK but in the US if you know someone in the military you can have the reception at an Officer's Club. You can also have it at someones house if they have a big yard or nice gardens. Good luck, and I'm not saying that you shouldn't have it in Oz, but you should consider what you are asking of the most important people.

What do you think of this: get married in Australia and have a little, intimate wedding (which sounds just perfect, btw), and when you return home, throw a party for your friends and family. Don't worry about them not getting along. They can deal for a few hours, you know? I was very stressed about family feuds starting up at our wedding, but if they did, our families were kind enough to not tell us about them, at least not then. :) You could have a slide show or some really nice prints made up for decor.
Oh, have fun!! Weddings are the best! And CONGRATULATIONS!! :)

Have your wedding there with just the parents present. When you move back to UK, have a reception and invite friends and relatives of your choice to join you in celebrating your marriage. Let it stay very casual and not a lot of expensive food A house is more important that spending a lot of money on your wedding unless you feel that you would be missing one of the most important things of your life.
