You know - I never thought of that. If a perfect being created perfect creatures, you wouldn't expect species to go extinct. (Unless, of course, the species in question did something to incite the wrath of God.)

After the flood (the one with Noah), there was probably a dramatic climate shift. Places that had once flourished with life were barren, places that had been tropical were covered in snow, places that had been dry were covered in water. For some reason or another, once the animals got off the ark, some of them weren't able to reproduce back to their full numbers in the new climate, and consequently died off. Ever noticed how most of the animals went extinct within a certain time period? That's why.

The flood in the day of Noah. drowned all the land animals. Noah saved 2 of the basic kinds on the ark.
