One who doesn't support the Gnostic [Organized Church] Beliefs and doesn't negate the existence of God.
Of course, they are denounced by both warring sides because they don't subscribe to either view of the the Gnostic and Atheist!!!!

It means without knowledge. One could be agnostic about anything. I am agnostic that there is a Denny's restaurant on Pluto. This simply means i haven't been there so i can't say weather there is or isn't one. In terms of religion it's usually used to describe someone who hasn't decided weather or not god exists or not because they do not feel they have the correct knowledge to make such a call. One could be an agnostic atheist and believe there is no god but not be sure enough about it to claim that there is no god for sure. You can also have agnostic theists as well.

Agnostic comes from the Greek root word 'gignoskein" meaning "know" and preceded by the prefeix "a" it become "agnostic" meaning a person who does not think we can know about something, for instance the existence of God. So an agnostic is a person who think that the theory about the existence of God is unknown or unknowable. In Dutch they called themselves "vrijdenker" meaning "freethinkers".
My uncle was a "vrijdenker" and insist that you cannot know about God at all. He is a Taoist and Buddhist follower and in fact leader, and taught me just to be good to everybody as much as you can. Whether your will go to heaven, if there is such a thing, can not be really known and so just do your best to society. I was very much influenced by him because he was like a second father to me, and treated me as his own son. In fact he did much more for me than my own father who was very busy as a Pentecostal minister and at the same time Treasurer of the Public Works Department in my home town, Makassar.
Not until I entered the university that I studied the Bible and found out that it was not as I thought before.

Literally, from Latin, "a" meaning "without" and "gnosis" meaning "knowledge."
It is used to describe someone who does not know whether God exists, or whether they agree with a religion. If we were more truthful, that would be most of us.
Did you hear the joke about the dyslexic agnostic insomniac? He stays up all night pondering the existence of dog.

Unlike a believer (who believes that there is God) on one extreme, and an atheist (one who believes there is no God) on the other extreme, an agnost neither believes nor disbelieves in the existence of God.
They are not willing to take either side and are open to embracing either option, provided they receive sufficiently convincing proof to support that option.

The answers you have gotten are, in the main, correct. I would, however, add that agnostics tend to be skeptics. They are open to be convinced either way but feel that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."
If forced to choose, the weight of evidence would indicate that god, astrology, ESP, aliens, and flying spaghetti monsters don't exist. If you've got verifiable, testable, reproducible, evidence to the contrary, let the world know.

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in a god. An agnostic, on the other hand, is someone who is uncertain whether or not there is a god.
