I'm an exchange student from Angola, Africa and I really want to be able to drive. I'm going to college next year and i have to be able to be independent... considering that my parents are still in Angola and can't afford to fly over here to drive me anywhere...lol. Any suggestions on how i can drive (legally ;-) )?

Each state has different rules. In Texas you need to be at least 18 and take your passport, I-94 card, and I-20. Everything must be valid for a few months into the future. Whatever school you're attending should help you with the paperwork. Some programs will even drive you to the local DMV.

States have their own rules. In general, as long as you are in valid status and otherwise qualify for a license (old enough, can pass the written and driving tests), then you can get a license from the DMV. In Virginia, you have to show ID document, legal presence documents (e.g., F-1 visa in passport and SEVIS I-20 form), and proof of residence (e.g., utility bill). Check with your state's DMV for requirements.

Ask an illegal Mexican. They seem to have figured it out.
