better to be married filing joint than single.
You have 2 kids either way, right? That's what I was assuming.

There's no way to answer this without more information.
In any case, as of December 31 you were either married or single, so which would give you more back doesn't really matter.
A married couple filing jointly, with only one working and one staying at home with the kids, would pay less tax than a single person with the same income. If both are working, then it depends on the two incomes and a few other factors.

Married is better unless the couple is making more than 125K a year, then you get hit with the Alternative Minimum Tax which causes you to pay more.

It all depends on the amount of income from you and your spouse jointly and the age of the children. If you and your spouse had a combined income for the year of more than $11,000 but less than $14,000, had two children under 17 y/o and if under 13 they were in daycare (as long as both spouses are working and/or attending classes) you would make out the best. Consider this....your exemptions (gifts per person on the return from the IRS) = 3,300 x 4----------MFJ standard deduction = 10,300-------------the maximum EIC = 4,600------------------and then child tax credit of $1,000 per child -----plus what was withheld from your W2 in Federal tax.
