Anywhere away from the city lights...

If you follow 101 west and north past Santa Barbara, you can see them very well. Lake Cachuma is a very good place (or anywhere in the Santa Ynez Valley. Jalama Beach is also another good location (check out jalamabeach.com).

If you go north on I-5, you can see well once you reach Gorman. Mount Pinos is a great place to view the stars. Another route is hwy 14 into the Antelope Valley. Acton is a pretty good stopping place, but if you want to go a bit further, try Mojave.

To the east, you need to get out past Cabazon to see well. Joshua Tree National Monument is an excellent stargazing location. Victorville and Barstow are getting a bit too large, but there is plenty of desert just past them on I-15 and I-40. Sometimes I'll roll down the window as I drive to Vegas or Laughlin just to remind myself that there are more than 12 stars in the sky.

To the south, you can go to eastern San Diego County. Just take I-5 south to Leucadia, I believe, and get off at Palomar Mountain Road, which will take you up to the Observatory.

Good luck!

It is kind of strange but Orange county with all it's light pollution, has the largest amateur astronomy club in the world, (I think it's all the tech types from Cal Tech, USC, UCLA etc...)....It is huge with all sort of lectures, meetings , night viewings, Griffith Observatory stuff....check it out....they know the best viewing situations....

Yeah, it is frustrating. You need to go East of our coastal hills in order to see the stars anymore. You might try driving South to San Juan Capistrano and going East on Ortega Highway. Somewhere near its summit or just East of it should be good for viewing.
Good luck!

I was once way up in the Santa Monica Mountians, and saw the stars well.

Mt Wilson Observatory will work, too.
