Both Science Diet and Iams have outstanding food for kitties that have "spare tires". I am fairly certain that these brands are available in Australia. If not, you may want to directly ask your vet or one of his/her assistants which brand they would recommend. They may recommend weight control food with a higher percentage of oats and/or rice.

All of our six babies (cats of all ages and all breeds) were overweight. Our fault as we have spoiled them horribly and made them the center of our lives. My husband and I have put them on Science Diet natural...organic chicken with peas, carrots and brown rice. Slowly, the weight is coming off of our "kids". They are even perking up more with the excellent quality of the food.

Good luck, dear and bless you for loving these precious babies! Your love and kindness will be repaid a hundred-fold!

try giving the older cat small amounts at a time, in a seperate room, that he will finish in one sitting, and just feed him when he seems to be hungry (generally a handful three or four times a day). make sure he is only fed when he is hungry or he will inevitably leave food for your little guy to gobble up. also, buy some kitten treats for your fluffy baby- they have a lot of calories and are packed with nutrition he will need. as long as he eats enough, he should be ok, but you're right- weight loss food isnt his best option :) he is eating it simply because he likes it (aww how cute is he?!), so maybe try mixing a little bit of a new kitten food in with his, see if he likes it, and give him more and more of that food, phasing out his old food-it seems he just doesnt like the kitten food as much as the older guy's food. good luck with your babies :)

You need to ween your cat from as much dry food as possible, and evertuall get him on to at least 75% wet food. I got my kitties from eating only dry vet approved food to only eating wet food by substituting a little bit of wet for dry. The didn't like it at first, but eventually I was able to gradually convert them over to the wet with excellent results. They lost weight, their coats improved to feel as soft as chinchilla fur, and they're bright and full of fun. I love the change in them. They are so healthy!. Please note that I found that all of the vet approved or vet supplied dry foods are full of cereals and fillers, and the wet foods are fatty and have fillers. The best wet food I found (I read all the labels) was at Walmart and is called Actrium. It works wonders. Try it.

Check this website out! Their food is soo much healthier than Iams, Purina, Eukanuba, Sheeba, etc. It's natural but costs a little bit more than the other leading cat foods. Regular cat food has a lot of sugar, fat, carbohydrates, and artificial flavors in them (not healthy at all).

just try feeding him a little less is all you have to do. there should be a chart on the side of your kitten food bag that will tell you how much to feed according to his weight. To get his weight, weigh yourself. Then weigh yourself holding him. Then subtract your own weight and you get his!

Go to a pet store or ask the vet. In America I feed my cats Hills Pet Nutrition/Science Diet. You are right; grocery store brands are not the best for your pets.
