She'll need a palate expander also. I'd like to know about any possible pain and how to relieve it, and also, I can't figure out how she's supposed to floss now?

When she gets her braces on and gets them tightened, her gums will be sort since the braces are apply pressure on her teeth. Make sure to stock up on soft foods for her to eat like mashed potato, jello, yogurt, soup...

She'll have to get some pain reliever medication if she can not tolerate the pain at first.

The dentist should provide a special cleaning tool to brush in between the braces and also for flossing.. she'll have to be extra focus on looping under the brace wire with the floss to floss between her teeth, it'll take her a longer time but it still gets the job done. Or there are toothpicks that special in flossing in the dental section of stores.

She will be in a good amount of pain for the first few days. She will have head aches and obvious mouth pain. For flossing the best thing to use is a floss pic which can be found by the regular floss in the store. The best thing that I found to when I had braces and was in pain when I was younger was cold pudding. For the first few days make sure she does not eat anything with a crunch. The more movement the mouth has to do the first few days while eating the more it will hurt. Good luck!

As a dentist who have done tooth braces surgery for hundreds of times, I can tell you the following:
1) The patient could expect certain degree of pain, but it will not be severe.
2) Like wearing new shoes, sometimes the new braces won't "click" so well with the gum. There could be some gum bleeding in the first few days
3) Some patients will get fever or persistent headache because of the braces. But this is perfectly normal. It will go away after 3-5 days.
4) Some patients will lose sleep. Again, no worry. It needs sometims to get used to it.

As for how much pain she will endure, it will depend on how sensitive her mouth is. Applesauce is always a good thing to eat and a good source for pain relief after getting the braces on. The dentist will probably ask her to only partake of liquids and soft foods for the next few days. As far as flossing goes she will need to loop the floss under her wires. Good luck!

I work in dental and I've had braces before, so make sure you have soup, pudding, mashed potato's, anything soft to eat for her. She will feel discomfort for the next couple of days. Depending on her age the doctor may prescribe Motrin for the pain. The orthodontic clinic should give you floss threaders to help her floss. She may be shy to talk and open her mouth until she feels comfortable with the braces on. Good Luck and it will all be worth it.
