They seem to be a bit extreme taking vitamins is good for you but overdosing on a daily basis is awful. Im talking about the people who do those endurance races for a living not to raise money. I live In auburn CA we have the 100 mile endurnace run from squa valley to here its 100 miles way to much these guys are nuts there not healthy they are overdoing it to the extreme!!!

Physiologically speaking, they are actually quite unhealthy. They do serious damage to their joints from all the training. Regular MODERATE exercise is what the human body is built for. Marathoners in training for races are generally far too thin, bordering on eating disorders, and do irreparable damage to their knees, ankles, and hip joints, often requiring surgery and dramatic interventions. Yes, running is great for the cardiovascular system, but at great expense to other systems in the body. There was a show about this on Discovery Health awhile back.

Frankly, I found a true marathon distance (26.2 miles) enough the first time around, and decided half-marathons would be adequate from then on.

A marathon takes really dedicated training and good health, and 50 & 100 milers must do nothing but train. I can't speak for the vitamins they take, but having trained and finished a marathon, I can tell you it doesn't surprise me that they might need those vitamins to sustain their bodies for that rigorous training & event.
