To get a VISA to the US you have proof that you are wealthy, which means that you are not interested in emmigrating to the US.

In my country, Brazil, you have to submit yourself to an interview with a worker of the embassy to get the VISA. If in his mind he thinks that you're poor and will try to emmigrate he will deny you the VISA. The funny thing is that the interview is done in only 2 Brazilian cities: Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Imagine it in a country with the size of Brazil... You have to travel sometimes 1,500km to one of those cities and reaching there you may have your VISA denied. You also have to bring with you some ammount of dollars in cash, cause your documents may be falsificated. The interview takes only 15 minutes. Reaching in the consulate you have to wait hours for the interview (even 8 hours), OUTSIDE the consulate, in the street. No chairs to you. After all those humilliations you may have your VISA denied if the interviewer thinks that you're not wealthy enough to deserve the VISA.

People may be travelling for business reasons, to meet the family or simply for tourism. All them have to face this humilliation.

And they say that people hate the US because they envy the US...

Not Canada, no. I'm not sure about Mexico. The United States State Dept website does state that "Section 19 of Canada's Immigration Act prohibits the admission of people who pose a threat to public health, safety, order, and national security. Prior to attempting a border crossing, American citizens who have had a criminal conviction in the past must contact the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate well in advance to determine their admissibility as visitors into Canada. If found inadmissible, an immigration officer will advise whether a waiver (Minister's Permit) is possible." Drug offenses are one of the most serious situations, and your friend will almost certainly be denied entry. He can get a passport, and can legally leave the country, but that doesn't mean other countries have to accept US felons, and most won't. One final word: know that US and Canadian border officials share information on criminal records, so attempting to lie your way across is pointless and might get you thrown in jail.

Because there will be a record that the person flew here, their name, information, etc. If they don't make the return flight back on the set date, the cops will have a warrant out for their arrest. With smuggling there is no record available.

no, they need to jump through many hoops and be well connected to get a visitor's visa and even then, there is a sort of a
lottery that can takes weeks or even months, so for those that want it now and don't have connections, it is easier to risk their lives instead.
